Adapting and Managing Home Care Operations for Managed Care.
11 a.m. - 12:30 p.m. - Home care agencies are finding that unique requirements accompany their arrangements with MC entities; these new responsibilities frequently call for operational and staffing changes to meet preauthorization rules, bill correctly, coordinate and report on care, and handle appeals. This session will provide direction into the types of operational changes that may be needed (and their implications for staffing) as agencies adapt to ensure a smooth interface with MC organizations.
Objectives:

Costing Out and Pricing Home Care Services.
1:30 - 3 p.m - One of the most serious mistakes a home care agency can make is underestimating the value (and cost) of the services it provides. Accurately determining the cost of providing services can be particularly thorny when an agency contracts with a MC entity by the visit, but otherwise delivers care (and views expenses) on an episodic basis. This session is designed to provide in-depth guidance on methods to accurately determine costs for providing care.
Objectives:
- Discuss how to price and cost-out your agency’s services.
- Describe methods to accurately determine costs for providing care.
Faculty: Ken McNulty; Vice President of Finance, VNA of Boston; Boston, MA

Legal Issues in Contracting with Managed Care Organizations.
3:15 - 4:45 p.m. - Once an agency has determined the types of administrative and staffing changes that must be made and the costs it will incur in delivering services under a MC model, the final challenge is to navigate the contracting process to ensure that the best interests of the agency are protected. This session will explore the many issues to consider when entering into a contract with a MC plan, with particular emphasis on essential elements to include in contracts, as well as clauses to watch out for.
Objectives:
- Discuss legal issues in contracting with MC organizations.
- Identify essential elements to include in contracts.
